Last Friday June 25th, my latest T206 arrived in the mail! Mickey Doolan batting with a Polar Bear back. I bought this on Net54's Buy/Sell/Trade board from a fellow member for $60 shipped.
This now brings my T206 set to 108 cards... only 412 remain for a 520 card set (complete set minus the big 4 - Wagner, Magie, Plank, and Doyle error). In percentage terms that is not quite 21% complete, so still a long ways to go.
I've been collecting T206's since high school... probably 1991 or 1992, so around 30 years. It's been a very slow process for me as I have had multiple starts and stops along the way. I have picked up mostly commons, although I started very early collecting backs, so I have done OK in that regards. Lately I have picked up some HOF'ers as I try to focus on stars more. I am doing the same for my post-war collection too.
So far for 2021 I have added 9 cards to my T206 set, plus also have acquired two duplicates - a Jeff Pfeffer Polar Bear back and a nice condition Sweet Cap backed Buck Herzog that I may have mentioned in my prior post.
This Doolan card also brings my Polar Bear back count up to 15, making my set mix about 13% Polar Bears so far. About 39% of my set are Piedmont backs, with another 27% being Sweet Caporal backs... so 2/3 are Piedmont or Sweet Caps. My goal is to greatly diversify my backs such that most of the set is non Piedmont/Sweet Cap backs. That will take a lot of time and considerable dollars as well, but I think I will be happier with a set having a much higher percentage of the more uncommon backs. The next most uncommon backs that I have the most of are Sovereigns, followed by Old Mill. Then I have 1-2 of most of the other backs down to the Carolina Brights (Jimmy Collins). I do not have any backs rarer than Carolina Brights right now.
I may take a short break from purchasing T206s as I have some expenses coming up in July and August (school tuition, kids dental work, hay for cows and goats, and a beach trip), but fear not I will post any new acquisitions here to blog. I am also looking forward to two card shows - one in September and one in October, both in the Nashville area. I am going to save some money between now and then so I have some cash to make some good pickups at those shows. Until next time, take care everyone!
